The Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) awards scholarships to deserving African-American freshman, sophomore, junior or senior level students pursuing a degree in journalism at an accredited four-year college/university annually. Deserving high school graduates or community college transfer students planning to pursue a degree in journalism are also encouraged to apply. Each scholarship, in the amount of $1,500, is awarded at the annual scholarship gala.
To be considered for a scholarship, all applicants must submit a complete application packet (see attached document), which includes, but is not limited to, an application form, letter of recommendation, samples of work and essay writings.
To ensure your application is ready for submission, have an instructor or advisor review your packet to confirm that your:
§ resume is clear and highlights your accomplishments;
§ essays are readable and address why you want to be a journalist and your selected question;
§ transcript is current and official;
§ recommendations highlight your strengths;
§ samples of work are appropriate and highlight your promise as a journalist; and
§ photograph is appropriate
Good luck and we look forward to receiving your complete application packet that must be postmarked no later than Monday, January 31, 2011!
