Scholarship Criteria

It is time to honor our best and brightest students with scholarships for the upcoming semester! The Houston Association of Black Journalists will be honoring journalism students who are either from Houston and attending college elsewhere or are attending Houston area universities.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants should mail an official college transcript, two letters of recommendation and a two page (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font) essay to:

Essay topic:  Explain why getting the story right should take precedence over getting it fast, even in the age of Twitter and Reddit. How have the recent incidents of news organizations getting a breaking story wrong, such as the Boston bombing and Supreme Court healthcare decisions, affected the public perception of the news media?

Other Criteria:

  • Must be a current full-time college student (undergraduate or graduate) and registered as a full-time student for the Fall 2013 semester (registered for a minimum of 12 hours)
  • Must be from the Greater Houston area or attending college or graduate school in the Greater Houston area
  • Must be majoring in a mass communications discipline (preferably journalism)
  • Must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • Must have three letters of recommendation from professors, internship coordinators, employers, pastors, community leaders, etc.
  • The aforementioned essay must be 500-words in 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spaced
  • Must submit official undergraduate or graduate transcript
  • Must submit resume
  • Submit cover letter.  List any special circumstances that make you deserving of this scholarship (i.e. hardships)
  • Mail all scholarship material to the HABJ Post Office Box
  • Deadline: All applications must be postmarked by July 5, 2013
