Mission

The Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists in Houston and the surrounding area. The organization was founded in 1986 and is the largest organization of journalists of color in Houston. HABJ is an affiliate of NABJ, the National Association of Black Journalists.

HABJ is committed to the following:

  • Strengthening ties among black journalists;
  • Being an exemplary professional organization that promotes excellence in achievement of African-American journalists;
  • Working closely with all media to ensure a fair work environment for its members;
  • Working closely with media managers to ensure opportunities are created for African-Americans to enter into the ranks of management;
  • Working closely with all media to ensure fair and balanced coverage of the African-American community, as well as the community at-large;
