HOUSTON
– Save the date for the Houston Association of
Black Journalists’ 22nd Anniversary Awards Dinner
appropriately themed: “Reporting with Diversity
and Rising Above Adversity” at 6:30 P.M. Friday,
February 15, 2008, at the Hilton Americas-Houston hotel.
We
are especially proud to honor great journalists who
continue to pave the way for others:
Paula
Madison, executive vice president of diversity for NBC
Universal, is the first senior executive in the company’s
history to hold a position solely devoted to diversity.
Madison will receive the covet HABJ Pinnacle Award.
Over the past 30 years, she has risen through the ranks
of the industry as a reporter, a news director and a
general manager.
Skipper
Lee Frazier, from legendary disc jockey to radio station
owner, Skipper Lee has been a Houston radio and entertainment
institution for nearly 54 years. He will receive the
HABJ Lifetime Achievement award for his more than five
decades of exemplifying excellence in journalist standards.
He continues to contribute to the profession at KWWJ
Gospel 1360.
James
T. Campbell is a vice president at Fleishman-Hilliard,
Inc., and recently completed a 20-year career at the
Houston Chronicle as a reporter, editorial writer, and
the reader representative. James will receive the HABJ
Spirit Award. As a journalism professional and community
leader in Houston, Campbell embodies the spirit and
mission of HABJ.
HABJ
is a nonprofit organization of media professionals from
the Houston area with members in every facet of print
and broadcast media. Part of HABJ’s mission is
to provide professional development, honor excellence
in journalism, cultivate young journalists and ensure
accurate coverage of the minority community. Consistent
with its mission, HABJ provides scholarships, future
workforce development and summer training opportunities
for college students majoring in communications. Additionally,
HABJ presents community outreach programs, seminars
and town hall forums free for community groups and communication
professionals. The goal of the dinner is to raise $150,000
to enable HABJ to continue its vital mission. We need
sponsors’ support to continue these worthwhile
efforts.
The
dinner will be held FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2008. Reception
is at 6:30 PM with dinner to follow at 7:30 PM at the
HILTON AMERICAS-HOUSTON on 1600 LAMAR, HOUSTON, TX 77010.
