Let’s Talk About It: Domestic Violence and Spanking...Are They Connected?

The first “Conversation in the Round,” hosted by the Houston Association of Black Journalists and Rice University’s Multicultural Community Relations Office of Public Affairs, was held at Farnsworth Pavilion on October 23.

The panel discussion was led by KPRC Local 2s Keith Garvin, who moderated a spirited discussion on domestic violence and spanking, and media coverage of the issues.

Laura White, a domestic violence survivor, opened the event by telling the crowd of just under 50 her harrowing story of abuse that culminated with her ex-husband receiving a life sentence for attempted murder.

White then joined panelists Nicole Huff, chief programs officer with ESCAPE Family Resource Center, Sonia Corrales, chief program officer with the Houston Area Women’s Center, Dr. Janice M. Beal, clinical psychologist with Beal Counseling Associates, Tabatha Conway, Child Protective Services, Donna Amtsberg, clinical associate professor, University of Houston, State Representative Harold V. Dutton Jr. (D-Houston) and Chester Pitts, sports analyst and an original Houston Texan, for the discussion.

“The panel was outstanding, with each bringing a unique perspective to the discussion,” HABJ president Jerome Solomon said. “These are important topics, and we learned a lot about how the media covers them and how we could do better in covering them. It was fascinating.

“I’m sure our members are looking forward to the next ‘Conversation in the Round.’”
