About HABJMission

The Houston Association of Black Journalists (HABJ) is an organization of journalists, students and media-related professionals that provides quality programs and services to and advocates on behalf of black journalists in Houston and the surrounding area. The organization was founded in 1986 and is the largest organization of journalists of color in Houston. HABJ is an affiliate of NABJ, the National Association of Black Journalists.

HABJ is committed to the following:

Strengthening ties among black journalists;
Being an exemplary professional organization that promotes excellence in achievement of African-American journalists;
Working closely with all media to ensure a fair work environment for its members;
Working closely with media managers to ensure opportunities are created for African-Americans to enter into the ranks of management;
Working closely with all media to ensure fair and balanced coverage of the African-American community, as well as the community at-large;
Encouraging the African-American press and black journalists to become media owners;
Sponsoring development programs to encourage high school and college students to become journalists;
Sponsoring college scholarships for students interested in pursuing a career in journalism;
Sponsoring internships for college and high school students;
Hosting workshops to help professionals and students keep up with technology and important developments in media;
Acting as a clearinghouse for jobs for HABJ members and to expand job opportunities;
Educating minority communities on media access and their rights and responsibilities as consumers and supporters of the media;
Hosting journalism institutes to enhance the skills of its members and students;
Providing informational and training services to the general public.
